What are the dissolution methods for hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC)?

Hot water dissolution method: As HPMC does not dissolve in hot water, it can be evenly dispersed in hot water in the initial stage, and then quickly dissolved during cooling. Two typical methods are described as follows:

1) Place the required amount of hot water in the container and heat it to approximately 70 ℃. Gradually add hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose under slow stirring, and HPMC begins to float on the surface of water, then gradually forms a slurry, which is cooled under stirring.

2) Add 1/3 or 2/3 of the required amount of water to the container and heat it to 70 ℃. Follow the method in 1) to disperse HPMC and prepare hot water slurry; Then add the remaining amount of cold water to the hot water slurry, stir, and cool the mixture.

Powder mixing method: Mix HPMC powder with a large amount of other powdery substances, mix thoroughly with a mixer, and then add water to dissolve. At this point, HPMC can dissolve without agglomeration, because there are only a small amount of HPMC powder in each small corner, which will dissolve immediately when it comes into water—— Putty powder and mortar production enterprises are using this method. Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC) is used as a thickener and water retaining agent in putty powder mortar.
